The Catholic Diocese of Rapid City will host 78th annual National Tekakwitha Conference in July 2017. The Conference began in 1939 as a gathering of clergy and religious personnel working in Native Ministry throughout the upper Midwest. The conference was opened to lay people in 1978 when it was last held in Rapid City, SD. Since then, the conference welcomes all who minister and work among indigenous people and all who share a devotion to Saint Kateri.
This has become international gathering, attracting participants not only from the contiguous 48 states but also from Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and other countries. The usual conference attendance is between 800 and 1200 participants. We anticipate a large turnout in 2017 since the Black Hills area is home to many spiritual sites of the Lakota People and numerous tourist attractions.
