The Mother of Mercy Alumnae Chorus (MOMAC) seeks to preserve the musical and cultural traditions of Mother of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, OH. Our goal is to pass on Mercy’s musical legacy in spirit, song, and love. A celebration of the power of choral singing, MOMAC is open to anyone who has attended Mother of Mercy High School, even if they were not active in musical groups during their high school career.
In a recent survey on social media, when asked what they remember most fondly, many alumnae mentioned the music we made together in Mercy's beautiful theater. We aim to continue this tradition and share our spirit with new generations of young women.
What are your plans?
As Mother of Mercy's anchor musical event was its Christmas concert, we would like to begin with a Christmas event in December of 2019 (please see below for specifics.) We'd then like to perhaps also have a spring concert. If attendance and interest are sufficient, we'd also like to join in community adventures, such as Christmas caroling at nursing homes and singing the National Anthem before sporting events.
Does it cost anything to join
In these initial stages, we ask a $15.00 donation per member for sheet music (although donations from non-singing alums and those who love them are more than welcome and greatly appreciated!) Chorus members must also provide a black binder for the performance and a pencil for rehearsal sessions.
If you are collecting donations for sheet music from each member for concerts, why do you need money beyond that?
Unfortunately, without a school, non-profit, or other organization behind it, MOMAC has no financial support. We must turn to the community to make our existence a reality. If you can volunteer to provide any of these, please contact email@example.com.
-A stable place to rehearse
-Funding for flyers, a ticketing system, and concert programs
-A stipend to pay a permanent director to coordinate the choir, organize volunteers, record and post rehearsal tracks, plan details of concerts, manage the budget, and run rehearsals
-A music librarian
-Office supplies (nametags, toner, etc)
-Photographers and videographers to preserve our performances
-A dedicated website to host music files for chorus members, preserve photographs and videos, and act as an information hub for the chorus
-Social media and advertising experts to get the word out to fellow Bobcats
-In the future, we would like to provide tee shirts for members, as well as refreshments for a post-concert audience reception
Who is behind starting the chorus?
Two members of the Mother of Mercy Class of 1995:
Julia Abanto-Bethune, a member of the Mother of Mercy Vocal Ensemble and Chorus, as well as a cast member of four Fall Musicals. Julia is an elementary music teacher at Sycamore Community Schools. She is also a professional vocalist/actress and performs with the Queen City Sisters.
Mary Beth Ellis, a two-year member of the Mother of Mercy Chorus. Mary Beth is a freelance writer and college educator.
