Why are we adding a building?
St Joseph's has over 300 children in Faith Formation classes which are currently held in five buildings spread across the campus. These buildings were not designed for classroom space and the rooms are small and outdated with little room for storage of educational materials. Construction of the Parish Center would alleviate all of these issues by providing our children with classes in one centrally located building with modern amenities.
We all know how inadequate the current community room and kitchen are, and a larger facility would allow us to host more parish events and could be used as a gymnasium for our children and as a gathering space for parents to meet during Faith Formation classes. The addition of a commercial kitchen would allow us to rent the community room for receptions and other events that require food service.
Parish staff offices are currently located on the first floor of an old house which was not designed for that function and the offices are cramped with little storage room and no waiting room for visitors. In addition to modern office space and a large meeting room, the Parish Center will include a reception area for visitors and a private area to meet with the poor and homeless for distribution of vouchers for Catholic Charities.
What is included in the building project?
The St. Joseph Parish Center includes 10 classrooms, four of which can be divided into smaller rooms with moveable walls, and can be used for meetings; a dedicated pre-school classroom with separate restroom and direct exit onto the playground; office space for the pastor and staff, including a reception area and a conference room; a large community room; commercial kitchen; new expanded playground; restrooms on first and second floor; an elevator (required for handicap access to second floor); several storage rooms; and storage cabinets in each classroom.
